Superintendent's Message
August 19, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome back to the Winslow Township School District and a new academic year. I hope you enjoyed a safe and restful summer vacation. Whether your child is returning to familiar classrooms or entering into a new one, the start of a new school year will be an opportunity for them to set goals, embrace new challenges, and reconnect with their friends and teachers.
During the summer, many of our teachers and staff were engaged in various professional development activities to hone their skills to ensure your child has a successful year. This school year, we will focus on creating a positive and inclusive school environment for your child, where everyone feels safe, valued, and supported. We expect every student to actively engage in all classes, ask questions, and to not be afraid to make mistakes, as they are all essential parts of the learning process.
Our primary objective again this year is to place greater emphasis on student achievement. We are asking parents for support by making sure that students come to school prepared to learn, and that we hold them accountable for their behavior and decisions they make. We cannot allow student behavior to dictate the quality of our education. The Student Code of Conduct will be strictly enforced and all students will be dealt with accordingly.
I would also like to take this opportunity to inform you of some staffing changes in our district, as
Ms. Lynette Brown is our new Building Principal at School No. 6; Ms. Denise Barr, as Building Principal of our new Early Childhood Education Center, at the Shirley B. Foster Elementary School in Chesilhurst; Mr. Jamil McEnnis, new Assistant Principal at Schools No. 4 and No. 6; and
Ms. Michelle Hairston, Supervisor of Special Projects. There will also be 61 new teachers and support staff joining the Winslow Township School District family.
Let’s make the 2024-2025 school year a successful one! The first day of school for students is Tuesday, September 3, 2024, and I look forward to seeing all of you in our schools this year.
Sincerely,
H. Major Poteat, Ed.D., Superintendent HMP/sem
